IMPORTANT

If you experience any problems playing backgammon
the easiest way to overcome them is so press F5
on your keyboard - this will refresh the lobby or the game, and restore normal functionality.

If this does not work,

  • Log out of the lobby
  • Close the game and the lobby windows.
  • Go back to ladbrokesbackgammon.com
  • Click PLAY NOW (above)
  • Log in again - your game will appear automatically.

How do I play the smaller dice?
By default the bigger dice number is played when you click on a chequer. To play the smaller dice first (especially from the bar) simply move your mouse to the top right (over the smaller dice) and click. This will move your chequer the smaller amount.

Having trouble starting your first game?

If you have accepted and agreed a game but the game does not appear, this is probably because you are using a pop-up blocker. To play you must disable this temporarily which will allow your game to launch. If you have any problems, please contact Ladbrokes' customer services, available 24 hours a day

How to start a game Click on Play Now to enter the Backgammon Lobby, from here you can join a game or create your own.


Types of Games available You can play Cash, Match or Free Play Games. Cash Game are one game played for an agreed stake per point and maximum stake. Match Games are played to an agreed number of points for a set amount (this could mean more than one game is played). Free Play games are played the same way as Match games but without a cash stake. We recommend beginners begin by playing free matches.


Join a Game To join a Game you must first select the game type (Cash, Match or Free) from the Game Type box. Click on the '-' symbols on the left to see more detail. In this area you can also restrict the stakes of the games you can choose from. Click on the type of games you want to see and they will be listed listed in the Choose game box. Simply click on the green Join Game button next to the player you want to play and your opponent will be notified of your challenge.


The games will show the alias of the player waiting, the stake (and total stake limit), the game type and the rating of the player. Click on each game to see more details in the view details box, including the turn times and rules. All available games will also have a Join Game button Once clicked you can still cancel or accept. Once you have accepted the player who set up the game has the option to accept your offer. If it is accepted the game will start.


Create Game If you cannot find a suitable game in the lobby, you can create your own game. Press the "Create new game" button and enter your game preferences. This game will show in the lobby for other players to challenge.


To create a new game click on the 'Create New Game' button and choose cash or Match. For cash games you must select stake per point and your maximum stake (limit). If you wish to create a match game, select match stake and number of points.


Rules Explained

Crawford rule (match play only): The first game when a player is within one point of winning the match, no doubling is permitted. Doubling is possible in the match after the Crawford game.


Jacoby rule (cash games only): This is a rule agreed by both players prior to the game commencing, whereby gammons and backgammons will only count for one point if no doubling has occurred during the game.


Doubling: Using the doubling cube, you can double the stakes at any time in the game, prior to rolling the dice. Doubling is not possible in the first round. Doubling will be limited depending on the amount of money brought into the game (game limit).


Beaver: This is a rule agreed by both players prior to the game commencing, whereby upon doubling, your opponent may re-double straight away and retain ownership of the cube. If original doubler refuse the beaver, they will forfeit the game.
